Some wrecks disappear quickly, devoured by the sea or dismantled far from public view. And then there are those that, against all odds, remain, become symbols, and change the face of the places where they are found. This is the case of the MV Maa, a Bangladeshi cargo ship that has been stranded on Tenneti Park beach in Vizag since 2020, transforming itself from a maritime accident into an urban landmark, between the charm of decay and ambitions of rebirth.

The story of a ship turned symbol
The Bangladeshi cargo vessel MV Maa, about eighty meters long and weighing over 3,000 tons, has become one of the most striking presences along the beach of Tenneti Park in Visakhapatnam (Vizag), Andhra Pradesh, India. The ship ran aground in October 2020, when a sudden storm dragged it to shore after it lost its anchors. Since then, it has remained stranded, leaning several degrees on a rocky bed, abandoned by its owners who were discouraged by the high cost of salvage operations.

The current condition of the wreck
Corrosion and decay
Exposed to sea spray, constant winds, and the waves of the Bay of Bengal, the vessel has turned into a massive natural laboratory of rust and corrosion. The MV Maa wreck now appears as a giant carcass of steel, with peeling plates and interior structures slowly collapsing. Far from diminishing its allure, this decayed look makes it a magnet for photographers, urban explorers, and curious visitors.

The dream of a floating restaurant
An ambitious project
Only months after the grounding, local authorities and the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation announced plans to transform the vessel into a floating restaurant in Vizag, aiming to turn the wreck into a tourist hub. Shore and Ship Resorts Pvt Ltd was brought in to explore the conversion.

Challenges and setbacks
The project, however, soon faced two major hurdles: the ship’s unstable tilt and the strict environmental regulations of the Coastal Regulation Zone, which restrict interventions along the coast. Years later, the restaurant project has yet to materialise, leaving the MV Maa stuck in a limbo between abandonment and opportunity.

A place between abandonment and rebirth
The future of the MV Maa in Vizag remains uncertain. It could become a bold tourist attraction, or it may simply continue to rust quietly by the shore. Either way, for lovers of urban exploration, the cargo ship stands as a powerful symbol: a meeting point of nature, history, and industry that creates unexpected scenarios and unique urban experiences.
