History

The conversion of the Vidzeme peasants to Orthodoxy led to the inauguration of the Orthodox Church of the Nativity of Christ on 26 July 1847, by order of the Holy Synod with decree number 6829. Before its foundation, sermons and mass were held in a small flat in Gulbere, and later in a house in Līdere.

The present church was built with state funds and consecrated in 1878 by Holy Bishop Seraphim of Riga and Jelgava. The first pastor was Andrej Gobinov, and the longest-serving pastor was Pēteris Žuravskis. There was also a school and a home for the disabled nearby.

Abandonment

The congregation disappeared in the 1950s and 1960s. Thereafter, the church was repeatedly violated and looted. Today, the building lies abandoned.
